So, my friend Steven texted me today to ask if I had ever heard the expression, "the pot calling the kettle black". I replied that, yes, of course I had. Apparently, it wasn't a given, because apparently most of the people he asked hadn't heard it. So, I'd like to do a poll myself. Have you heard that expression?
And, to add to the excitement, my dad used an expression tonight I had not heard before. So, have you heard the phrase, "jump the shark?" Do you know what it means? Bonus points to the person who can tell me the origin of that one...

Don Allen uses that expression all the time!
I have never used the phrase myself, but I googled it and came up with some very interesting stuff! (However, providing the origin this way seems to be cheating...) :)
what does it mean?
and yes, i've heard of "calling the kettle black"
Never, ever, heard of "the pot calling the kettle black" before I read it on Steven's blog.
But I've heard "jumped the shark" a lot! It means (am I allowed to say?) to get ahead of oneself, right? Or at least that's what I've thought from context.
My roommate and I were talking about the kettle phrase last night. I said I would have never been able to decipher what that meant by context if I grew up with it. But then the shark one is pretty weird too.
I've heard of the pot calling the kettle black. "Jumping the shark" I heard of a little while ago and if I remember what I read on Wikipedia back then it means that something has passed the prime of its existence and is "getting old". It's from an episode of Happy Days, I think.
