Sorry for the late response to the poll. Thanksgiving kind of happened last week and took my focus off of obscure (or not) phrases.
Anyway, Sam was right about jumping the shark. It's used, usually in the entertainment business, in reference to a person or a show who has resorted to unbelievable or over-the-top ridiculous antics in order to keep something going which is past its prime. It originated with an episode of Happy Days, where the Fonz actually literally waterskis a jump over a shark. It was at this point in the show's lifetime where many people decided Happy Days had run its course.
Another note on the pot calling the kettle black. I was sick over the weekend and spent some time on the couch watching movies. In 13 Going On 30, that phrase is referenced not just once but MULTIPLE times. If it's used in such an icon of pop culture as this romantic comedy, it can't be that obscure, can it?
